Theonie has practiced in the privacy and technology field for nearly a decade and has substantial experience in advising on all aspects of privacy, technology contracting, data commercialisation and protection, digital transformation, licensing of intellectual property and franchising law.

Theonie is a trusted advisor to both Australian and international clients across a range of industries including banking, higher education, technology, social media, loyalty programs hospitality, motor vehicle and fuel retailers and consumer goods.

Australian banking sector

Advising National Australia Bank on the creation of a large global technology capability centre in India which will provide digital, technical and IT functions to the bank.

Theonie has also advised another Australian bank on a number of major IT projects including the implementation of voice recognition software across its call centres and the procurement of critical information technology services.


Acting as a key legal advisor to Flybuys on all technology contracting matters, its digital advertising business ‘Unpacked’ and its arrangements with brands participating in its loyalty program, including the recent launch of Flybuys at Officeworks and Bunnings.

Various OEMs

Advising a number of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on all aspects of their digital service offerings including advising on software and technology agreements, privacy considerations and advertising requirements.

Government business enterprise

Advising a large government business enterprise on the acquisition and implementation of payment device hardware and software across its retail network.

International brands

Acting as Australian counsel in relation to data, privacy and consumer law matters for various international brands including LinkedIn, Google, Marks and Spencer, JD Sports and Open Table.
