Naomi is a leading environmental and planning lawyer with over 20 years’ experience advising ASX Top 50 companies and other major corporates. She provides strategic and pragmatic advice in relation to environment, planning, native title and Aboriginal cultural heritage, State Agreements, carbon, and land access matters including mining tenements, pastoral leases and Crown land.
Naomi advises clients on new and emerging policy and regulations associated with greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, carbon credits, ACCU scheme projects and the transition to a lower carbon economy. She brings a wealth of experience and insight to her practice, drawn from roles at organisations including BHP and Todd Minerals, as well as from work in strategic environmental policy development with the Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
Naomi has practised across multiple Australian jurisdictions and internationally and has worked in the United Kingdom and Canada.
She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Master of Laws (Environmental) from the University of Sydney. She is a former member of the Mining Rehabilitation Advisory Panel, an independent statutory panel advising the Director General of the Western Australian Department for Mines and Petroleum.
Advised on State and Commonwealth environmental approvals and environmental impact assessments for numerous Western Australian, South Australian and Northern Territory iron ore, manganese, copper, gold, nickel, bauxite and lithium mining projects. Naomi has also advised on compliance actions taken by environmental regulators and closure-related matters.
Advised a waste company on environmental approvals matters relating to the end-to-end management of Australia’s most challenging by products and hazardous materials.
Advised a carbon farming joint venture on regulatory and land access matters relating to the establishment of various carbon farming projects in Western Australia. This included advice on registration under applicable methodologies, land access templates including carbon rights, and planning approval related matters.
Advised a renewable energy company on the successful resolution of a State Administrative Tribunal planning appeal for wind farm development in Western Australia.
Advised on the negotiation of a native title agreement in South Australia relating to numerous uranium exploration tenements and on implications arising from amendments to the Aboriginal Heritage Act in South Australia.
Advised on environmental and carbon related matters associated with the acquisition of a participating interest in a major gas field development project in Western Australia.
Advised on the approvals strategy and review and submission of environment plans for offshore and onshore oil and gas projects.
