Where: Bird & Bird
"I have recently returned from a year long secondment to the Dispute Resolution team in the London office of Bird & Bird. Even though I have only been back in Sydney for approximately two months, I can already see how much I have grown professionally and personally due to my year abroad.
The people at Bird & Bird were very welcoming and friendly, used any excuse to buy cake for the team (not that I’m complaining!) and loved to socialise outside of work. During my secondment, I was fortunate enough to work primarily on a high profile and interesting matter that involved a conflict of private international law in relation to succession law spanning England, Italy and New Zealand. It was a particularly eye-opening experience to gain an in depth understanding of the Italian jurisdiction, being my first experience of litigation in a civil law system.
Life in London was exciting and ever-changing. From deer watching in Richmond Park to ice skating in Somerset House to seeing two of Van Gogh’s Sunflower paintings side by side for the first time in 65 years in the National Gallery to watching Pat Rafter play Tim Henman in Royal Albert Hall - you were never short of things to do in London itself. And then you were only a few hours from the rest of Europe. Highlights of my travels would have to include being present for a Papal blessing in Rome on my birthday, buying up big at the Christmas markets in Bruges, pintxos hopping in San Sebastián, being amazed (and deafened) by a flamenco show in Madrid, relaxing in a natural thermal bath in Budapest and admiring the view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower. My year in London was definitely a memorable experience."
