Ian's Expertise
- Class Actions Ian has acted in some of the most significant Australian class actions, including: for the Commonwealth Government in the defence of Pharm-a-care – the largest class action ever brought against the Government and centred on alleged negligence by a Regulator; for the successful corporate distributor in Wallis Lake – who avoided statutory liability; and the successful “dissident shareholders” in Dairy Farmers – who obtained a permanent injunction against a demutualisation.
- International Trade He has acted in a variety of cross border international trade disputes for financiers, importers & exporters involving multi-jurisdictional litigation spanning court systems in Australia, Singapore, India, England & the USA.
- Banking & Financial Services Disputes Ian acts for international & domestic banks and other financial services clients in a variety of disputes, including: acting in the recovery of a multi-million dollar security trader fraud; acting in a variety of complex multi-million dollar unit pricing disputes centred on the rights & obligations of investment managers, custodians and funds administrators; and acting for an FX options broker in relation to a complex dispute centred on the cause of multi-million dollar trading losses.
- Product Liability Ian acts for various multi-national corporations in relation to Australian product liability law issues faced by them, including: AGC Glass (building & construction products); Alcon (medical products); BP (petroleum products); Johnson & Johnson (medical, pharmaceutical & consumer products); and Pokémon (consumer products).

New rules usher new era for dispute resolutions

On 1 August 2011 the Federal Court brought in new rules. They repealed their old rules and heralded a new era of modern Court practice and procedure.
