Corrs In Brief Election 2007 - Workplace Reform Update
25 November 2007
Following Labor’s success in the Federal election on Saturday, what changes can we expect to Australia’s system of workplace regulation? Labor’s ‘Forward with Fairness’ Policy and Implementation Plan commit the ALP to reversing the ‘Work Choices’ legislation, in two stages:
- first, through a Transition Bill to be implemented in early 2008; and
- secondly, through a more substantive piece of reform legislation which Labor has indicated will be the subject of extensive consultation (including with its Business Advisory Group). It appears that this substantive legislation will take effect some time in 2009, with some elements commencing operation on 1 January 2010.
In this ‘In Brief’, we examine the key elements of Labor’s policy proposals, the extent to which they will result in significant changes to the current Work Choices laws, and the likely timelines for their implementation.
