John Kelly

Partner and Chairman

John Kelly became a partner of the firm in 1974 and has practised as a commercial and business lawyer for 30 years. He is Chairman of the board of directors of Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

John’s primary area of practice is the negotiation and documentation of major commercial transactions and projects. He brings to this area of practice skills and experience from his involvement in a wide range of projects and transactions including gas and electricity projects, mine development and infrastructure projects.

Recent deals include:

  • advised Queensland Treasury in relation to the major restructure of the urban water supply arrangements for South East Queensland involving the transfer of the bulk water assets and businesses of 21 different local governments and water authorities to a new bulk water supply authority and a new bulk water transport authority
  • advised Queensland Gas Company Limited (QGC) in establishing an alliance with BG Group to co-operate in the development of a major LNG plant at Gladstone to produce 3 – 4 million tonnes of LNG per year, utilising QGC coal seam gas.
  • advised Macarthur Coal in relation to its acquisition of Custom Mining Ltd and the Middlemount Coal Project
  • advised the State of Queensland in relation to its agreement with China Aluminum Corporation (Chalco) for the development of the $2.9 billion Aurukun Bauxite Project
  • advising the Queensland Department of Infrastructure on significant components of its $7 billion investment in water infrastructure in South East Queensland
  • advised Queensland Rail in relation to its $1.3 billion acquisition in conjunction with Babcock & Brown of the Australian Railroad Group business; and
  • advised Enertrade on gas supply and gas pipeline arrangements for the Moranbah to Townsville gas pipeline and the development of the gas fired base load Townsville Power Station (220MW).
John has featured in Chambers Global Lawyers as among the top energy lawyers in the world, for the fifth year in succession and was recently listed in Best Lawyers Australia, published in the Australian Financial Review, as one of Australia’s best energy and natural resources lawyers.
