John specialises in advising public and private sector clients on planning and environmental issues including environmental impact assessment, planning approval processes, environmental due diligence, contaminated land issues and environmental management systems. He has particular expertise in acting for Commonwealth and State government agencies undertaking large public infrastructure projects including transport, electricity and telecommunications. He has developed a significant practice in relation to the operation of Part 5 of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 which governs the environmental impact assessment of projects by public authorities.

John also has extensive experience in acting for local government councils and in acting for developers against councils. He also has significant experience in advising the resource and mining sector on planning and environmental laws relating to the development, implementation and operation of mines and quarries.

John acts for clients such as the NSW Department of Transport, Department of Public Works and Services, Roads and Traffic Authority, State Rail Authority, Telstra and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He acts in all types of proceedings in the NSW Land and Environment Court and has litigation experience in the High Court and Supreme Court of NSW.
