Philip Catania

Philip practises in the area of technology and intellectual property law and specialises in information technology, e-commerce, copyright and trademarks.

Philip has a computer science degree and prior to joining the legal profession was employed as a computer programmer and analyst. Subsequent to that he was retained by the Law Institute of Victoria to assist in the implementation of an electronic communications network for the legal profession.

Since completing his articles with the firm in 1987, Philip has acted in some of Australia's major IT implementation and represents some of Australia's leading organisations in their IT and IP matters, including Foster's Group Ltd, GE Capital Australasia, L'Oreal Australia, Accenture and Cadbury Schweppes.

The overlap between IP and IT is a significant part of Philip's practice and his work in this area includes:

  • Issues relating to trade mark use on the Internet and domain name disputes;
  • The use and protection of copyright works in the IT environment; and
  • Reviews of client's business systems, products and processes to determine their practicability.
Philip is the Partner in Charge of the Corrs Melbourne Office. He is a past president of the Victorian Society for Computers and the Law and member of the Australian Law Council's Information Technology Committee.
